2024/06/14
On June 13, 2023, a delegation of young scholars from the Max S. Baucus Institute at the University of Montana visited the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies.
Dr. Lu Chuanying, Deputy Director of the Institute for Public Policy and Innovation Studies at SIIS chaired the roundtable. Professor Yang Jiemian, Chairman of SIIS’s academic affairs council delivered opening remarks. SIIS experts had in-depth discussions with American young scholars on topics such as global governance, China-US relations, the Taiwan question, Ukraine crisis, artificial intelligence, etc.
Former U.S. Ambassador to China Max Sieben Baucus wrapped up the roundtable. He encouraged American young scholars to share what they have seen and heard after returning home. The Chinese and American people have common desires. He hoped that the young scholars would deepen their thinking and understanding of China-US relations through field trips and exchanges. Professor Yang Jiemian pointed out that no advanced communication technology could replace face-to-face interactions. Young scholars should not only "read thousands of books", but also "travel thousands of miles". He encouraged young scholars to be bold enough to speak up for what they believe is right, look at issues squarely and contribute their wisdom to the peaceful development of the world.
SIIS young scholars Mr. Zhang Chong and Ms. Yu Yue joined the discussion.
